Q4 2026 Auto Buyer Trends: Holiday Shoppers Saved Up and Set Limits

Q4 2026 QCIS: Inside the Holiday Car Buyer

Purchase intent just reached its highest point since Q4 2025. More than half of in-market shoppers say they're more likely to buy during the holidays, and 57% have been saving all year for a year-end deal. And 59% say they'll walk away if the APR lands above a number they've already picked.

The Q4 2026 Quarterly Consumer Intent Survey from C-4 Analytics surveyed more than 1,000 in-market car shoppers nationwide, trended against Q2 2026, with two supplemental studies on affordability and trade-in. The buyer it found has money set aside, a firm financing ceiling and specific standards for a used vehicle. Dealers who make the value clear early in the quarter have the advantage. Dealers who hold their best offer for Black Friday weekend are playing to a quarter of the market.

What's Inside

  • The APR threshold 59% of shoppers refuse to cross, and how to present financing so your offer clears it before the conversation starts
  • Why holding your strongest offers for Black Friday weekend misses most holiday buyers, and how to pace offers across the full quarter
  • The mileage cutoff 58% of shoppers won't go past, and which trades it says to chase this quarter
  • Extended warranty coverage is the No. 1 driver of a used purchase for 26% of buyers. How to separate included protection from paid coverage in your listings and ads
  • Year-end tax benefits influence 60% of shoppers, yet 21% don't know what those benefits are. The education gap your holiday messaging can close
  • The age band where 54% plan to buy in the next 90 days, and how to work with the 68% of shoppers who say they're willing to compromise
  • The four moves the data supports for winning Q4, from incentive messaging to used and CPO advertising

About the QCIS

The Quarterly Consumer Intent Survey is proprietary research from C-4 Analytics, now in its sixth year. Each quarter we survey more than a thousand in-market car shoppers nationwide on purchase intent, vehicle and brand preference, dealership selection and the forces shaping buyer behavior. The questions stay consistent quarter over quarter, so the movement we report is real movement and not survey noise.
