How One Ford Dealer Boosted AI Visibility, Increased Traffic from AI Sources & Sold More New Vehicles

AEO for Ford Dealers: 203% More AI Traffic | C-4 Analytics
13:05

Overview:

AI assistants aren’t new anymore. In fact, according to a recent consumer insights survey conducted by C-4 Analytics, 64% of car shoppers will use AI during their next purchasing journey. With that many people looking beyond traditional search, smart dealers are creating an AI Search strategy that will increase their visibility wherever customers are searching, asking, shopping and buying online.

When a Pennsylvania Ford dealership came to C-4 Analytics with the goal of dominating AI search, our Organic Media team crafted a bespoke strategy designed to build visibility around three of its top selling models. By focusing on these high-priority models, we saw significant increases in search visibility along with corresponding increases in sales.

On average, the three highlighted models had a 240% increase in visibility. This correlated to an average 14.5% increase in new-vehicle sales for those highlighted models.

To achieve these results, we built a Model Research Portal designed to establish the Ford dealership as a local expert and authoritative resource for the three highlighted vehicles. Rather than simply creating more model content, we built a structured content hub around each model, answering specific questions customers were searching for and connecting those resources to the dealership’s existing model, inventory, and specials pages.

The result was increased visibility across all three models, corresponding increases in model sales, and a major lift in traffic from AI sources, especially ChatGPT.

Objective & Goal Validation

When we began this project, we had several primary goals in mind. We wanted to establish a standardized Model Research Portal framework for dealer websites that creates a content architecture for top-selling models. Our tangible goals included:

  • Build authoritative, model-specific content hubs
  • Capture high-intent, model-level search demand
  • Support both traditional organic search and AI-driven search platforms
  • Establish dealerships as trusted resources for specific models using E-E-A-T principles

Our model portal was designed to test and validate the following questions:

  1. Traffic & Visibility Impact
Does publishing hyper-specific, model-focused content increase organic traffic and improve SERP placements?
  2. Authority & Trust Signals
Can structured model hubs and content clusters strengthen perceived expertise, authority, and topical relevance?
  3. AI Discoverability
Does this content architecture improve visibility, citation frequency, and discoverability in AI-powered search experiences?

Our Methods:

1. Research

As with most SEO projects, our Model Research Portal started with research. The C-4 Analytics SEO Team conducted research into which types of pages performed best in AI Search and AI Overviews. While this particular project was completed nearly a year after our initial study on how auto dealers can win in AI Overviews, a similar methodology was applied. By using this approach, we determined three specific types of pages to include in the model portal.

Since models were chosen based on the Pennsylvania Ford dealer’s inventory levels at the time, we then began researching specific queries related to each of those models. By using a combination of keyword research tools, Google Trends and research on AI platforms, we determined five topics for each model we planned to highlight. These topics were, by design, hyper-specific queries. This allowed us to create question-based content designed to answer real customer queries while capturing long-tail search demand.

2. Writing & Launch

Once the topics were chosen, C-4 Analytics’ team of writers created several individual landing pages for each model. Each landing page followed a similar format and incorporated key SEO elements to ensure it would appeal to both traditional search algorithms and LLMs. Each page also incorporated Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) principles to improve visibility in the modern era of search.

After the pages were live on the dealer’s website, we created a main portal page. This page included a section for each featured model. The page was built to incorporate different questions and answers related to each model in a clear, easy-to-read format that appeals to users, search engines and LLMs alike.

From a technical standpoint, the portals established clear site architecture designed to make the content easy for both search engines to crawl and users to navigate. This approach served two purposes: creating a logical structure for search engines and LLMs while also making the content easy for humans to read and explore.

Model Portal Optimization Results:

Sales

This is the question most dealers will want the answer to:

“Did this SEO effort help the dealership sell more cars?”

The simple answer is yes. During the three-month testing period, the dealership saw increased visibility for each of the models featured in the portal, which correlated with an increase in new-vehicle sales for those models.

Many different conditions, including market and inventory, can impact how many cars a dealership sells during a set time period. That said, this Pennsylvania Ford dealership did see an increase in sales (that correlated with an increase in visibility) three months over three months for every model highlighted in the portal.

  • The F-150 had a 19% increase in visibility, and a 6% increase in sales
  • The Bronco Sport had a 220% increase in visibility, and a 12.5% increase in sales
  • The Maverick had a 482% increase in visibility, and a 25% increase in sales

Overall Visibility

In order to track the Ford dealer’s visibility, we turned to Google Search Console. At the time of this project, Google’s Generative AI reporting had not yet launched in Google Search Console. Instead, we tracked clicks and impressions. Overall, the Ford dealership’s site enjoyed:

  • A 25% increase in organic clicks 3 months over 3 months
  • A 22% increase in organic impressions

Since Google Search Console also did not yet isolate clicks to content appearing in AI Mode or AI Overviews, we hypothesised that if a specific page was receiving a high amount of impressions but a low amount of clicks, it had earned an AI Overview spot. We already know that the site earned a 22% increase in organic impressions during testing. However, by isolating the highlighted model queries (and related iterations of the queries), we could determine how much each model’s visibility was impacted by this experiment.

  • “Ford F-150” and related queries had a 19% increase in impressions
  • “Ford Bronco Sport” and related queries (with plain Bronco filtered out) had a 220% increase in impressions
  • “Ford Maverick” and related queries had a 482% increase in impressions

We also noted that the model portal’s subpages were not the only model pages receiving increases in impressions. Related inventory pages, specials pages and even previously created model pages all had boosts in impressions, too.

These results support our hypothesis. By boosting a site’s expertise and authority signals about specific topic entities, dealers can increase their overall site’s relevancy for traditional and AI-powered search.

Organic Traffic & Traffic from AI Sources

We evaluated the results of this project for three months after implementation. When analyzing data, we looked at three months over three months, using the date of implementation as the start of our tracking period.

To start, we analyzed how much traditional organic traffic each page received. While not all pages in this experiment earned significant organic traffic, select pages did receive quality organic traffic. The page that received the most organic sessions was built around the topic Ford Maverick Colors. This page received 252 organic sessions in three months. However, this page also had a 53% engagement rate, which was the lowest engagement rate of all pages in the model portal.

Meanwhile, we know that related pages outside the model portal had increases in visibility during the testing period. During the same three-month period, the Ford dealer also saw a 28% increase in organic traffic. This increase in organic traffic also resulted in a 28% increase in engaged sessions and a 26% increase in key events.

In addition to the increase in organic traffic, the Ford dealer’s site enjoyed:

  • A 203% increase in sessions from all tracked AI traffic sources, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Co-Pilot, Perplexity and Claude.
  • A 196% increase in sessions from ChatGPT specifically.

Key Takeaways & Goal Validation:

Before we started creating model portal content, we asked three core questions to determine the value of this project:

1. Traffic & Visibility Impact

Original Question: Does publishing hyper-specific, model-focused content increase organic traffic and improve SERP placements?

Answer: Yes. Publishing hyper-specific, model-focused content resulted in a 28% increase in organic traffic to the dealership’s website during the testing period and impressions indicate that the portal pages earned many AI Overview placements. We also saw a 203% increase in traffic from tracked AI sources with a 196% increase in traffic from ChatGPT.

Takeaway: An increase in visibility can lead to an increase in both organic traffic and traffic from AI sources. That visibility is valuable, even if it doesn’t result in a direct click. When a dealership builds authority around a specific topic, the benefits may extend beyond the individual pages created for that initiative. Existing model, inventory and specials pages can also become more visible for related searches, leading to increased traffic on those pages.

2. Authority & Trust Signals

Original Question: Can structured model hubs and content clusters strengthen perceived expertise, authority, and topical relevance?

Answer: While there’s no set KPI to determine how authoritative the dealer’s site was before/after implementation, a significant increase in impressions for the featured models allows us to draw the conclusion that the site’s topical relevance has improved for those models.

Takeaway: An increase in visibility for core topics can improve a site’s overall authoritativeness for those topics. If a dealership is more trusted, it will be highlighted more frequently in AI-powered responses, which leads more people to the dealership organically. Those people may ultimately convert into sales.

3. AI Discoverability

Original Question: Does this content architecture improve visibility, citation frequency, and discoverability in AI-powered search experiences?

Answer: Our results support the conclusion that this content architecture can improve visibility and discoverability in AI-powered search. During the testing period, the Ford dealership’s site saw a 203% increase in sessions from tracked AI sources, including a 196% increase in sessions from ChatGPT specifically. We also identified instances where pages created as part of the portal appeared as citations in AI-powered responses. However, because AI citation tracking remains difficult to measure consistently, we can't provide a definitive increase in citation frequency.

Takeaway: AI visibility isn’t limited to driving direct traffic to the pages a dealer creates for a specific initiative. Building comprehensive, authoritative content around a specific model can give AI assistants more information to learn from and inform their responses to customer questions. By consistently building authoritative content around topics people are searching for information on, dealers can create a site that AI platforms consider an expert, trustworthy resource, thus creating a site that’s worth being cited.

What This Means for Auto Dealers:

Ultimately the takeaway here is simple: visibility matters. Building comprehensive, authoritative content around the vehicles a dealer sells can create more opportunities to be discovered across both traditional and AI-powered search, thus giving dealers more opportunities to sell to customers who might not have found them otherwise.
