A British Columbia Honda dealer rebuilt its paid search around the communities its buyers come from, and geo-targeted search drove 76% of its conversions in the first six months

How does a Honda dealer win shoppers when one strong on-brand rival is competing for nearly every one of them? For this British Columbia store, the answer was paid search built around the communities that buy from it. In its first six months with C-4 Analytics, a dedicated geo-targeted campaign drove 880 of the store's 1,153 paid search conversions, and the store moved ahead of its closest Honda competitor in local search auctions.

The Challenge

This British Columbia Honda dealer competes for nearly every shopper against one strong on-brand rival. Its marketing budget was concentrated in a lean paid search program, so every dollar had to reach a buyer who could realistically end up on its lot.

Organic search was already in good shape. Paid search was the problem. The store was getting outbid on its own Honda models, had little presence in Vehicle Listing Ads and wasn't bidding on service searches.

The Strategy

C-4 Analytics rebuilt paid search around the communities that buy from the store. A dedicated geo-targeted campaign carries about a third of the search budget and goes after shoppers looking for a Honda dealer in those communities.

Separate campaigns cover core Honda models like the CR-V, CR-V Hybrid and Pilot, alongside a low-funnel campaign for shoppers ready to visit. The team added a service campaign the store hadn't been running and built landing pages written for the questions shoppers ask AI assistants, so the store shows up in AI answers as well as on Google.

The Results

In its first six months, paid search produced 1,153 conversions, including 456 calls from ads and 409 store visits.

The geo-targeted campaign did most of that work. It drove 880 conversions, 76% of the total, on about a third of the spend, at a $0.52 cost per click. In local search auctions, the store held a 43% impression share against 28% for its closest Honda competitor, and ChatGPT and Gemini both rank it first for key regional searches.

Honda Dealer Performance First Six Months
Paid search conversions 1,153
Conversions from geo-targeted search 880 (76%)
Calls from ads 456
Store visits from ads 409
Search impression share vs. closest Honda competitor 43% vs. 28%

What This Means for Auto Dealers

A lean search budget goes furthest when it's aimed at the specific communities your buyers come from. A campaign built around those towns puts every dollar in front of shoppers who are likely to make the trip. For this store, about a third of the spend produced 76% of the conversions.

If your paid search runs on one big radius around the store, look at where your buyers actually live and whether your campaigns are built around those communities.
